Abstract
The impact of the nonverbal cue in human interaction especially face-to-face has been investigated over time. With the development of the internet, Social Media Network Services, and Instant Messengers, there has been a need to use non-verbal cues. Emoji as a computer-mediated non-verbal cue among others is one of the ways users communicate among themselves. However, limited studies have investigated its impact on effective communication among WhatsApp users.
This study was designed to determine the impact of WhatsApp emojis on effective communication among undergraduates of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences University of Ilorin. The research design used for the study was a cross-sectional study. The survey research method was adopted as the research method; a questionnaire was used as the instrument of data collection. A total of three hundred and twenty (320) undergraduate students constituted the sample size. At the end of the analysis, it was discovered that emojis significantly impact effective communication among users. And, after text, emoji is the most used WhatsApp media among users.
The study also shows that emoji promotes interest, and guarantees interactivity, understanding, and feedback among WhatsApp users. It is, therefore, recommended among others, that WhatsApp users should cultivate the habit of using it as it enhances effective communication.
