THE PROVERBIAL POEM by YAHAYA HABEEB KAYODE JAYPEE-D-POET

Early to bed, early to RISE
Makes a man healthy, wealthy and WISE
And a stitch in time always saves NINE
But remember! Once step at a TIME

Not all that glitters are purely GOLD
A fine face may hide a foul heart, so BEHOLD!
So cut your coat according to your CLOTH
Not all cakes must be gulped down the THROAT

It is true cleanliness is next to GODLINESS
Moderation plus civility bring ORDERLINESS
Nothing makes a room cleaner than a new BROOM
Leaping before looking is a shortcut to DOOM

Fine birds are known with fine FEATHERS
Your friends are the definition of you in all WEATHERS
Things are not really always what they SEEM
You cannot serve two masters of different TEAMS

Practice as much as you can of what you PREACH
Sacrifice can offer you gold from the dirtiest PITCH
Know that beauty is in the eyes of the BEHOLDER
The smoothest file may even be in the roughest FOLDER

As a man lives so shall he DIE
Why not stay in your lane, let sleeping dogs LIE
When in Rome do as Romans DO
And act like a Nigerian in Nigeria TOO

Not all whom dogs bark at are THIEVES
How ugly will a tree look without its LEAVES?
When the cat’s away the mice will PLAY
Fear of death surpasses death is all I’m trying to SAY

What you can do today never stage it TOMORROW
Procrastination is the thief of time and the path to SORROW
The leopard for sure cannot change its SPOTS
Why not BE YOURSELF and always amend your FAULTS

To err is human, to forgive is DIVINE
Forgiveness is charity don’t let it DECLINE
Always know that fortunes favour the BOLD
Knowledge is power one doesn’t need to be TOLD

Know that empty vessels make the most SOUND
And every single man has a room in the GROUND
A friend in need is a friend INDEED
A bad friend’s mission is only to MISLEAD

An honest man’s word is as good as his BOND
Our knowledge is a drop of water in life’s POND
Better no law that law not ENFORCED
A city without laws is a city CURSED

An Iroko tree cannot be fallen with a STROKE
Likewise, a baobab tree and a giant OAK
It is true Rome wasn’t built in a DAY
That’s why we need to make hay as the sun shines its RAY
