FROM BEAUTY TO BEAST By Yahaya Habeeb Kayode (Jaypee_D_Poet)

Ada was one of the prominent beautiful ladies in the village of Odu. She was naturally clothed in beauty and was so proud of her charming skin. Most men could hardly let go their eyes off her because of her unraveling beauty. Whenever they see her, they display their affection vividly, wishing to have her as a wife. She was wooed by different men but she rejected them all. Ada’s parents were drowned in the river of anxiety, expecting their charming daughter to bring home a fiancé but she showed no concern, she’ll rather boast to be the most haunted girl in the whole village when it comes to beauty.
Ada was also known to habitually spend most of her precious times while dressing, she always preens minutes by minutes like a cock wanting to mate a hen. Whenever her mother rebukes her, she grumbles; muttering some confusing words which seemed to be a scowl.
Despite the unbearable attitudes of Ada, it was so astonishing that the population of those who sought Ada’s hand in marriage get accumulated day-by-day. Though she loved some of the wooers but she didn’t make apparent neither did she fall to any of their sugary promises and propaganda. She preferred having their minds soused with depression. Other ladies due to jealousy have become immersed in jeering her, they gave her lots of satirical names among which is ‘’Ada, the beautiful which who makes our men drawn like a dog’’, this name later got dispersed to the ears of the villagers, yet, she didn’t resolve to choosing any of the wooers.
One lengthy night, Ada was engrossed by a thought. She wanted an influential, wealthy and famous man for a fiancé but she didn’t know how she could achieve this. She was wakeful throughout the lengthy moment of that night. While she was meditating, she thought to herself ‘’I will not step outdoor until the richest man in this village come to seek my hand in marriage.
Ada did as she had planned, most of her wooers were drenched with drops of curiosity not seeing her heart-arresting beauty but nothing they could do. The richest man was alarmed with the fast-spreading news of her absence. Maduke ordered 20 cows and 50 baskets of grains to seek Ada’s hand in marriage. Ada’s parents agreed waiting eagerly for her response. She also agreed to move into Maduke’s castle.
A day before Ada is to move into Maduke’s castle, she planned to reach the river to have a cool bath, probably, the last one of her biographical home. She took the back door and headed swiftly to the river. Few miles away from the river, a man has just eaten bunches of banana and garlanded the ground with the peels. Ada was unaware of the situation and hasted more swiftly towards the garlanded surface. She stepped unconsciously upon the peels, slipped to a certain height and landed heavily on the ground having her head bashed to some scattered crooked stones on the floor. Unfortunately, her head and face was adorned with wreaths of swollen bumps. ‘’oh my beauty! It’s totally gone’’ She bellowed with tears. She advanced towards the brim of the bank, scattered her body and returned home.
On getting home, her mother was the first to see her, she was so bewildered. She knew no man would ever delight in seeing her or asking her hand in marriage with such ugly face. She quizzed her’’ what happened to your beauty?’’ Ada in-hesitantly narrated her ordeal. While the melancholy occupied her heart, knocks were heard consecutively at the door. Ada’s mother opened the door and to her surprise, it was Maduke; the richest of all, had she known it was him, she wouldn’t have opened the door. Maduke entered and caught a glimpse of the beauty- Chameleoned- in-to a beast Ada. He was fore-mostly shunned, then got bad- tempered. He ordered his stragglers to retrieve all cows and baskets of grains. He left angrily with his AGBADA billowing to the dance of the breeze.
After some days, Ada’s condition has become the talks of the village. She was referred to as the ugliest lady in Odu village. Most of the former wooers made sarcastic expressions to her. They do call her ‘’beauty princess which does not rhyme with her facial condition. Ada became a lady who forced herself on some miserable drunkers. She became the’’ beauty-that-turned-into-a beast’’.
